What you'll study

The course concentrates on core emergency assessment and intervention skills used in pre-hospital and emergency settings. Teaching blends classroom theory, simulated clinical practice and supervised workplace placements to develop confident, job-ready clinicians.

• Clinical assessment and patient management: systematic primary and secondary survey, vital signs interpretation, patient monitoring and clinical decision-making.
• Airway, breathing and circulation: basic and advanced airway care fundamentals, oxygen therapy, chest injury management and cardiopulmonary support techniques.
• Trauma care: haemorrhage control, spinal protection, fracture and soft tissue injury management, and triage for multiple-casualty incidents.
• Medical emergencies: recognition and initial management of acute cardiac, respiratory, neurological and metabolic emergencies commonly encountered in the pre-hospital setting.
• Pharmacology and medications: safe medication administration, common emergency drugs and understanding indications, contraindications and dosage principles.
• Clinical communication and cultural safety: handover, documentation, teamwork, patient-centred communication and care for diverse and remote populations.
• Health, safety and professional practice: infection control, workplace health and safety, medico-legal and ethical responsibilities in emergency care.
• Simulation and workplace learning: high-fidelity simulation scenarios and assessed placements with ambulance services or emergency departments to consolidate practical skills.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a recognised senior secondary qualification or an equivalent vocational qualification. Selection also considers relevant work experience in health or emergency services for mature-age applicants. Candidates must demonstrate fitness for clinical placements and meet mandatory workplace requirements such as police checks, immunisation and current cardiopulmonary resuscitation certification.
