What you'll study

This programme begins with a foundation year that develops core scientific knowledge and study skills, followed by specialist forensic science modules in subsequent levels. • Foundation year topics: academic skills and research methods, introductory chemistry and biology, basic mathematics and data handling, laboratory practice and health & safety, and an introduction to crime scene awareness and investigative principles.
• Core forensic modules: forensic chemistry, forensic biology (including DNA theory and quality issues), trace evidence examination (fibres, hairs, soils), toxicology principles, microscopy and instrumental techniques, and serology.
• Investigation and practice: crime scene examination and evidence recovery, fingerprint and impression evidence, scene documentation and photography, chain of custody and evidence packaging, and courtroom skills including report writing and expert witness preparation.
• Professional and research skills: laboratory quality systems, ethics and legal frameworks, communication and professional development, and a supervised practical research or investigation project demonstrating applied technical competence.

Entry requirements

Bournemouth University welcomes applicants with a range of academic backgrounds. Typical applicants will have a mix of GCSEs (including English and mathematics or equivalent) and some post-16 study such as A-levels, BTEC or other vocational qualifications, but the foundation route is designed for those who do not yet meet standard undergraduate entry criteria.
