What you'll study

The programme blends core engineering principles with specialist marine technology modules. You will study topics such as marine propulsion and auxiliary systems, ship and offshore structure materials, marine electrical and control systems, engineering mathematics for technicians, and computer-aided design (CAD) for marine applications. Modules typically include systems fault-finding and maintenance, sea systems and hydrodynamics introductions, instrumentation and sensors, corrosion and materials selection, and health & safety and regulatory frameworks for marine operations.

Learning is delivered through a mix of taught sessions, practical workshop exercises, laboratory work and project-based assignments. You will complete design and diagnostic projects that replicate industry scenarios and will often work in teams to prepare technical reports and specifications. The programme includes opportunities for workplace learning or industry placements where available, and offers clear progression routes via a top-up year to an honours degree in engineering or marine engineering.

Entry requirements

Typical entry is from a relevant Level 3 qualification such as a BTEC National Diploma in Engineering, an ONC/HNC transfer, or two A-levels including a numerate subject. Applicants with substantial vocational experience in marine or mechanical engineering are also considered on an individual basis. GCSEs in English and mathematics (or recognised equivalents) are normally required; applicants missing one of these may be asked to demonstrate competence through prior learning or an assessment. International students will need to meet the university's English language requirements.

Typical job roles include marine engineering technician, vessel systems operator, maintenance engineer, ship repair technician, marine survey assistant and offshore technician.
