A set of fully funded four-year doctoral positions at the University of Akureyri for candidates who will develop and pursue an independent research project within one of the university’s listed fields. PhD candidates develop an original research project within one of the university’s stated fields of opportunity. Available research fields include social sciences (sociology, law, psychology), health sciences (nursing), education sciences (education studies), and business and natural sciences (natural resource sciences, biotechnology, fisheries and aquaculture science, business administration). Applicants are expected to prepare their research proposal in collaboration with a prospective supervisor and work within the University’s areas of research expertise.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a relevant master’s degree with excellent academic results and demonstrate strong research potential. A clearly defined research project within the listed fields is required and applicants must have been in contact with a potential supervisor before applying. The application process is two-stage: an initial short application (Stage 1) outlining academic background and research interests, and a subsequent full application including a detailed research proposal if invited. Stage 1 deadline is 22 September 2026; successful candidates are expected to begin studies in February 2027.
