What you'll study

The program provides 64 semester hours of nursing coursework structured in intensive blocks over one calendar year. Prior to application, applicants must complete several prerequisite courses; these are not part of the 64 nursing hours but are required for admission. Required prerequisite courses (with credits) are:

• BIOL 221 General Microbiology — 4 credits
• FCS 157 Introduction to Human Nutrition — 3 credits
• FCS 260 Introduction to Human Development — 3 credits
• PSYC 101 General Psychology — 3 credits
• MATH 224 Statistics — 3 credits
• NURS 415 Healthcare in a Global Society — 3 credits

Additional prerequisite courses that carry a five-year expiration are:

• CHEM 104 General Chemistry I — 3 credits
• CHEM 114 General Chemistry I Lab — 1 credit
• BIOL 350 Human Anatomy & Physiology I — 4 credits
• BIOL 351 Human Anatomy & Physiology II — 4 credits

Applicants should confirm course equivalency using the university's Transfer Credit Articulation Tool before enrolling in prerequisites. If intending to take prerequisites at the university, contact the Office of Extended Learning.

Entry requirements

Admission is competitive and based on the strength of the applicant pool. Key criteria are:

• A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum cumulative graduating GPA of 3.0.
• Completion of the required prerequisite courses; a grade of C or better on the first attempt is preferred.
• TEAS test scores that meet or exceed the National Mean; applicants may retake the TEAS until the benchmark is met.
• Listing on the N.C. Nurse Aide I Registry (CNA I).
• A writing sample and a possible interview for further consideration.

Following admission, students must provide current immunizations, a negative drug screen and a background check.

Application process notes: New second-degree applicants use the university undergraduate application and must select Nursing (Accelerated BSN) as the major; official transcripts and completion of prerequisites are required at time of application. The ABSN internal application (submitted Aug 1–Oct 1) requires the TEAS score report, CNA I registry verification, and a personal statement; interviews may be requested. Readmitted students follow a similar internal application timeline and must submit a re-admission form to the Registrar if accepted.

Career prospects

Graduates complete a BSN pathway designed to prepare them for licensure and practice as professional registered nurses. The intensive, cohort-based curriculum emphasizes clinical preparation through concentrated coursework and clinical experiences conducted throughout the 12-month sequence.
