A combined pathway that lets students complete a bachelor’s degree and an MPH in four or five years, with options to accelerate to a 3+1 schedule. Suited to undergraduates who want a direct, cost- and time-efficient route into public health practice, epidemiology, biostatistics or related health professions.

What you'll study

Students build foundations across public health practice, with opportunities to begin MPH coursework during the undergraduate senior year (counting up to 12 graduate credits toward both degrees). The curriculum includes a community-focused practicum to apply classroom learning in real-world settings. Two scheduling tracks exist: an accelerated 3+1 option (three years undergraduate plus one year graduate) available to Exercise Science, Health Science and Psychology majors; and a 4+1 option (four years undergraduate plus one year graduate) available to most majors.

Entry requirements

Applicants request the dual degree on the Common Application. Minimum incoming-first-year criteria include a 3.3 high school GPA, four years of math and science coursework, and a grade of B or better in all math and science classes. To progress into the MPH, students must complete the bachelor’s with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0, earn at least a grade of C in any graduate courses taken while an undergraduate, and submit a 1–2 page Statement of Purpose outlining related volunteer/work/research experience and career goals for using the MPH.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles in public health, epidemiology and biostatistics and similar fields; Sacred Heart reports a 100% placement rate for its MPH alumni working or studying in related areas. The source material also notes high demand for medical and health services management roles, citing BLS projections of substantial job growth and median earnings figures for that occupational area.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

The dual degree can reduce total time and tuition compared with completing degrees separately. Students in the 4+1 track may qualify for additional scholarship support beginning in their junior year. Dual program participants also benefit from reserved graduate-school admission, which can reduce application-related stress.
