A combined Bachelor’s–Master’s pathway that lets students complete undergraduate exercise science requirements and progress directly into the MS in Exercise & Sport Science. Suited to students aiming for careers in strength & conditioning, sport science, or leadership roles in health and wellness who want an accelerated, hands‑on route to graduate credentials.

Programme overview

Sacred Heart’s dual degree lets students earn a bachelor’s degree in exercise science at the undergraduate level and advance into the Master of Science in Exercise & Sport Science without a separate graduate application, provided they meet program progression criteria. The program is accredited by the International Universities Strength and Conditioning Association (IUSCA) and offers two scheduling options: an accelerated 3+2 model (three years undergraduate coursework plus two years graduate coursework, with some summer classes and a prescribed sequence of study) and a 4+2 model (four years undergraduate coursework plus two years graduate coursework). The 3+2 option requires coordination with an undergraduate adviser and allows students to switch to 4+2 if needed.

What you'll study

Coursework emphasizes applied and research skills in exercise and sport science. Students gain multi‑semester internship experience, access to on‑campus facilities, and mentorship from Division I head strength and conditioning coaches. Research opportunities include athletic performance, sport nutrition, applied physiology and biomechanics. Undergraduate students must complete all bachelor’s requirements in exercise science by the end of year three for the 3+2 option.

Entry requirements

Incoming first‑year applicants join the dual degree by selecting it on the Common Application. Admission is competitive; minimum criteria include an overall high school GPA of 3.3 or higher, four years of math and science coursework, and grades of B or better in all math and science courses. Students admitted to the dual degree must continue to meet program‑specific progression criteria as undergraduates to enroll in the graduate program.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for roles in strength and conditioning and sport science settings across private, high school, collegiate and professional environments. Typical job titles include lead sport scientist, performance coach, head coach, strength and conditioning coach, director of health and wellness, exercise specialist, fitness coach, and fitness center owner/manager. The program also positions students to pursue doctoral study (Ph.D. or Ed.D.).

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Participating in the dual degree can reduce total time and tuition compared with completing separate degrees, and secures a reserved place in graduate study to avoid late applications. Undergraduates receive academic advising and access to faculty and industry events; study abroad opportunities are available as part of the broader offerings.
