What you'll study

Coursework and assessment center on foundational and transdisciplinary questions within women’s and gender studies. The program includes a core sequence, qualifying examinations focused on pedagogy and transdisciplinary studies, electives, and research tools. Students are encouraged to pursue teaching and publication as integrated emphases and make use of available research methods courses, a degree plan, and a course rotation schedule provided by the program.

Entry requirements

Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of women’s and gender studies and familiarity with feminist and/or womanist theories through prior coursework, their writing sample, and personal statement. Minimum GPA requirements are: a 3.5 GPA for the final 60 hours for applicants applying directly from a bachelor’s degree, and a 3.0 GPA in graduate-level coursework for applicants holding a master’s degree.

• Statement of purpose: ~1,000 words explaining goals and fit with TWU's program.
• Writing sample: academic paper up to 6,500 words (excluding notes and references).
• Current CV or résumé.
• Contact email addresses for two academic recommenders to submit letters via the application system.
• Official transcripts for all post-secondary institutions; international applicants require a NACES or AICE evaluation rather than sending transcripts directly to TWU.
• Application fee: $50 domestic, $75 international; fee waiver options exist for eligible McNair Scholars and some TWU alumni.

Applicants apply through TWU's Online Graduate Application Portal and may need to submit supplemental program documents listed in the application. Students interested in Graduate Assistantships must meet the General Criteria for Appointment of Graduate Assistants.

Career prospects

The program prepares graduates for diverse roles that combine research, teaching, and leadership. Emphases on pedagogy, publication, and transdisciplinary study aim to equip students for faculty positions, academic administration, program development, community-engaged scholarship, and other leadership roles addressing gender and social justice.

TWU notes Graduate Assistantships as a funding avenue; applicants must meet general appointment criteria. Fee waivers may be available for eligible applicants (for example, certified McNair Scholars and some TWU alumni).
