Programme overview

The Doctor of Philosophy in Physical Therapy at Texas Woman’s University is a post-professional PhD designed to prepare physical therapists for careers in research and higher education. TWU is one of seven U.S. institutions and the only program in Texas offering this degree. The curriculum is individually tailored around a student’s clinical and research interests, and courses are delivered through a mix of on-site and online formats with on-site sessions typically meeting one to three weekends per semester. On-site classes are offered at the Dallas and Houston centers.

What you'll study

The program requires a minimum of 60 semester credit hours beyond the master’s degree, including at least six semester credit hours allocated to the dissertation. Coursework, independent study, practicum experiences and the dissertation are structured to develop a deeper scientific basis for clinical practice and advanced research skills. Students work closely with a faculty mentor in their clinical area of interest. In addition to course requirements and research, the program has a residency requirement, a qualifying exam and a final oral exam. Some coursework from other accredited DPT programs may be applied toward the 60-credit minimum.

Entry requirements

Applicants must hold a master’s degree or clinical doctorate (DPT) from an accredited program; the master’s may be in a related field. Graduation from an approved CAPTE-accredited or equivalent entry-level physical therapy program is required. A PT license to practice in the United States is preferred; alternatively, a minimum of 24 months of full-time clinical practice within the last three years is preferred. A basic statistics course taken within the last 10 years and a minimum GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) are required. International applicants or applicants whose bachelor’s degree was completed in a non-English-speaking country must meet TOEFL minimums of 22 writing, 24 speaking, 22 reading comprehension and 21 listening comprehension (Total 89) unless exempt. Official documentation to submit includes a copy of PT license, a written statement of professional and research interests, CV/resume, email contacts for two referees, and official transcripts or an approved international evaluation where applicable.
