What you'll study

Students complete foundational and advanced coursework in human development, social policy, practice methods and research, plus general education co-requisites. Required social welfare courses (33 units earned at FPU) include:

• PSY 411 - Abnormal Psychology
• SW 221 - Helping People: Introduction to Social Work
• SW 301 - Human Behavior and the Social Environment
• SW 321 - Theory and Practice with Families
• SW 331 - Cultural Competence in Social Work Practice
• SW 401 - Foundations of Social Work Practice
• SW 411 - Working with Groups
• SW 421 - Becoming a Change Agent
• SW 451 - Social Welfare and Public Policy
• SW 485 - Social Science Research I
• SW 497 - Social Science Research II

At least four of the following general education co-requisites must be taken prior to or during the program (it is strongly recommended they be completed before starting the cohort):

• BIOL 100 - Principles of Biology (or BIOL 125 via ADT)
• ECON 103 - Introduction to Economics
• PS 121 - American Government
• PSY 119 - General Psychology
• SOC 121 - Introduction to Sociology

Entry requirements

Admission is by committee review of academic record, work experience and a personal statement. Applicants must have at least two years of post-secondary experience. Students must earn C- or higher in social welfare courses to receive credit; general education or elective courses may be credited with a D-.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to pursue entry-level positions in nonprofit and human service settings or to continue into advanced study, subject to the requirements of the graduate institution. The program emphasizes practice skills, policy engagement, research-informed practice and ethical integration of faith in service roles.

Applicants are encouraged to complete the FAFSA (Fresno Pacific FAFSA code provided) and to consult Student Financial Services for loan eligibility and planning. The admissions office provides guidance on transcript submission and other documentation needed for enrollment and financial aid.
