Programme overview

The Bachelor of Social Work and Social Administration prepares graduates to lead social change, development and empowerment with an emphasis on social justice, human rights and care for marginalized populations. The course combines classroom learning with practical application and is delivered at UCU through multiple campus and study-mode options. The standard programme length is three years with a maximum of five years to complete.

What you'll study

Teaching is delivered through lectures, discussions and project work that require critical thinking and practical skills. Course content includes foundational and specialist topics such as:

• Psychology
• Anthropology
• Sociology
• Core social work theory and practice
• Economics
• Rural development issues
• Non-profit organisations
• Work with elderly and terminally ill clients
• Child and family social work
• Project planning
• Social justice and human rights, and approaches to working with marginalized groups

Entry requirements

In addition to the university's general undergraduate admissions requirements, applicants may qualify under the following routes:

• Direct bachelor route: two A Level principal passes, with at least one in economics or entrepreneurship.
• Diploma applicants: one A Level principal pass.
• Other routes: successful completion of the mature age exam.
• All applicants must complete a departmental interview.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for a range of public, non-governmental and community roles, including probation officer, social welfare officer, medical and clinical social worker, child protection officer, career advisor, charity officer, counsellor, social activist and youth or adult guidance worker.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

Application information and fee details are published by the university. Application fees listed by the programme include UGX 100,000 for Ugandan nationals (with higher fees for programmes that require pre-entry exams) and USD 50 for international applicants. Intakes run in Advent/September, Easter/January and Trinity/May and the programme is offered in a mix of full-time day, evening and weekend modes across several campuses.
