What you'll study

Coursework combines practical engagement with conceptual inquiry. Core courses listed in the program include:

• ESE-5442: Transformative Teaching and Leadership — examines fundamental questions in education while embedding inquiry in concrete teaching–learning situations and school organizational contexts; frames teachers and administrators as agents of systemic change.
• ED-5800: Teaching and Learning — focuses on attending to the processes of learning itself across a range of subject matter (poetry, math, close natural observation, physical phenomena) and how colleagues learn together.
• ED-5810: Seminar on Freedom and Responsibility — explores the relationship of freedom and responsibility in education, especially relevant amid pressures toward conformity, compliance, and assaults on educational freedoms.

Entry requirements

Applicants submit an online admissions application with essay responses and a resume/CV, pay a non-refundable $50 application fee, and provide official transcripts from all postsecondary institutions attended. Two letters of recommendation are required from evaluators who are not related to the applicant. Selected applicants will be interviewed by a faculty member (in person, by phone, or via Skype). Master’s and certificate applicants are not required to submit GRE or other standardized test scores. Additional requirements apply for international applicants and for applicants without a bachelor’s degree. Application deadlines are: Summer term — April 15; Fall term — August 1; Spring term — December 1.

The certificate is intended for teachers, university faculty, educational leaders and administrators, and others working in teaching, leadership, and social or environmental justice. Graduates can expect to apply the program’s frameworks and practices to classroom instruction, school leadership, curriculum development, community education projects, and roles that emphasize reflective practice, collaborative change-making, and place- or justice-centered programming.
