Postgraduate Certificate in Wildlife and Conservation Management

DegreeShort Training
FieldEnvironmental Science

A one-year distance-learning postgraduate certificate that teaches practical and applied skills for managing wildlife and habitats, delivered primarily through weekday-evening live online lectures with optional in-person field weekends in Scotland. Suited to graduates or experienced practitioners aiming to move into ecological surveying, habitat or woodland management, or to progress into a related MSc.

What you'll study

Teaching emphasises applied skills and understanding across ecological surveying and habitat management. Core topics identified by the course include wildlife surveying techniques, woodland management and rural land use planning, with broader coverage of conservation management approaches. Learning combines weekday-evening live online lectures, asynchronous materials and two in-person study weekends in Scotland (attendance optional but recommended) that provide field-based experience.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold at least a 2:2 Honours degree (or equivalent). The course attracts students from diverse academic backgrounds, including non-science degrees. Exceptionally, candidates without a degree but with substantial relevant experience and clear motivation may be considered.

Career prospects

Graduates gain practical surveying and site-management knowledge relevant to roles with conservation NGOs, land and woodland management services, ecological consultancy and local or national environmental agencies. The certificate also functions as a stepping-stone for students who wish to continue on to MSc-level study in related fields.

Scholarships & funding angle
