Programme overview

The Bachelor of Science in Hebammenwissenschaft at BTU Cottbus–Senftenberg is a seven‑semester, full‑time degree taught in German on the Senftenberg campus. The curriculum is split between a university-based theoretical and practical teaching component and a legally required professional practice phase delivered in cooperation with hospital practice partners. Applicants must arrange a contract with a hospital practice partner coordinated via the Medizinische Universität Lausitz – Carl Thiem (MUL‑CT) before enrolment.

What you'll study

Students develop competencies to independently counsel and care for women during pregnancy, labour, the postpartum period and lactation, to lead physiological births autonomously, and to examine, care for and monitor newborns and infants. The programme also introduces students to research topics in midwifery science and how to apply scientific findings to professional practice and interdisciplinary contexts.

Entry requirements

The programme is governed by the Hebammengesetz (HebG, 22 Nov 2019) and the Studien‑ und Prüfungsverordnung für Hebammen (HebStPrV, 08 Jan 2020). The course comprises a university part and a vocational practical part; a hospital practice partner is legally required for the vocational component (HebG §§13,15,19). Applicants must first apply to the MUL‑CT as practice partner, naming their preferred cooperating hospital. A contract with a hospital practice partner is the basis for application and enrolment at BTU. The programme is offered in the winter semester and instruction is in German.

Graduates are prepared for work in clinical settings (delivery suite, postnatal ward, prenatal units), self‑employed practice (independent midwifery, midwife practice, birth centre), academic and research roles at universities, teaching positions at higher education institutions, and advisory roles within social services or state and church organisations.
