What you'll study

Students study the foundations of geology: mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, structural geology, paleontology and stratigraphy, along with introductory geophysics and geochemistry. Instruction typically combines lectures, hands-on laboratory work (hand-sample and thin-section study, mapping, basic analytical techniques) and field exercises that teach observation, data collection and interpretation.

Entry requirements

Entry is through standard undergraduate admission channels. Successful candidates commonly present a high-school diploma or equivalent with preparation in math and science; prior coursework in earth science, biology or chemistry is helpful but not always required. Transfer students may apply relevant community-college credits toward degree requirements subject to departmental review.

Career prospects

A BA in Geology prepares graduates for roles in environmental consulting, natural-resource support positions, laboratory and field technician work, and education at the K–12 level when combined with teacher preparation. Graduates often pursue further technical training or professional certification for careers in hydrogeology, environmental assessment or resource exploration, or continue to graduate study in geology, environmental science or related fields.
