The Bachelor of Arts in Geology is an undergraduate programme that introduces students to Earth's materials, processes and history with a liberal-arts framing. It suits students who want fundamental geological knowledge combined with flexibility to pair geoscience with other disciplines such as education, environmental studies, or policy.
Students study the foundations of geology: mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, structural geology, paleontology and stratigraphy, along with introductory geophysics and geochemistry. Instruction typically combines lectures, hands-on laboratory work (hand-sample and thin-section study, mapping, basic analytical techniques) and field exercises that teach observation, data collection and interpretation.
Entry is through standard undergraduate admission channels. Successful candidates commonly present a high-school diploma or equivalent with preparation in math and science; prior coursework in earth science, biology or chemistry is helpful but not always required. Transfer students may apply relevant community-college credits toward degree requirements subject to departmental review.
A BA in Geology prepares graduates for roles in environmental consulting, natural-resource support positions, laboratory and field technician work, and education at the K–12 level when combined with teacher preparation. Graduates often pursue further technical training or professional certification for careers in hydrogeology, environmental assessment or resource exploration, or continue to graduate study in geology, environmental science or related fields.
Students should explore institutional scholarships, department awards, and external geology- or STEM-focused scholarships. Funding opportunities may include undergraduate research grants, field course subsidies, teaching or research assistantships for advanced study, and internships that offer stipends; early inquiries with the department and financial aid office improve chances of securing support.
