A STEM-designated MS focused on combining core accounting, auditing and financial reporting with applied data and business-analytics tools. Suited to accounting graduates or those with substantial U.S. GAAP accounting coursework who want analytics skills that support CPA preparation and extend work-authorization opportunities for international students.

What you'll study

The program integrates accounting subjects with applied analytics. The website points students to a curriculum flowchart and the Bulletin for course-by-course detail. Learning outcomes emphasize:

  • Applying critical thinking to accounting issues and solving applied/analytical business problems (identify problems, analyze data, draw conclusions).
  • Analytical communication, including organizing information, preparing accounting/business reports, using appropriate writing mechanics and data visualization.
  • Preparing accounting data for analysis—extract, transform and load (ETL) processes and using software to clean and format data.
  • Applying ethical reasoning in accounting, fraud examination and forensic analytics, preserving data and evaluating stakeholder perspectives.
  • Utilizing accounting analytic tools and techniques to build models relevant to accounting problems.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a completed or nearly completed bachelor's degree in accounting or equivalent accounting coursework—typically about 24 hours of U.S. GAAP-based accounting courses (Principles, Intermediate I & II, Cost Accounting, Audit, a U.S. Taxation course and Accounting Information Systems). Candidates without an accounting degree but with significant core accounting coursework (typically 6–7 courses) are also considered. Other application components and conditions from the program page include:

  • Completed online application and $50 fee (fee waived if you attend an online info session).
  • Official transcripts from all colleges attended (Marquette excluded) and final official transcripts to the Graduate School upon admission.
  • Minimum 2.750 GPA; applicants with GPA below 3.000 must submit GMAT or GRE scores per Marquette policy.
  • Essay questions, a resume or job profile, and two letters of recommendation if applying for financial aid; possible interview.
  • Additional requirements for international applicants: GMAT/GRE if undergraduate institution is not AACSB-accredited, proof of English proficiency (TOEFL or accepted equivalent), two letters of recommendation, possible interview and a course-by-course transcript evaluation from an approved service (ECE, Educational Perspectives, One Earth, SpanTran, WES).

Career prospects

The program targets roles that blend accounting knowledge with analytics capability; the site highlights broad market demand for analytics skills (noting 2.7 million analytics job postings in 2025). Graduates are prepared to work where accounting, auditing, forensic analytics, data preparation and model-building intersect, and the STEM designation can extend hiring windows for international students via up to 36 months of OPT.

Scholarships & funding angle

Marquette lists a comprehensive set of merit-based graduate aid options (graduate assistantships and fellowships) on its financial aid webpage and notes private scholarships may be available. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may be eligible for need-based federal student loans. Prospective students applying for aid should consult the program’s financial aid resources for details.
