See the degree grade →A Master of Science in Computational Mathematical and Statistical Sciences trains students in building, implementing and applying computational models to solve scientific and engineering problems. It suits students with undergraduate preparation in mathematics, computer science, engineering or natural sciences who want a computationally focused master’s that can either lead directly to industry roles or prepare for doctoral study.
Students study a core of computational mathematical and statistical sciences that supports research across a broad spectrum of disciplines. Learning outcomes for the master's include applying advanced discipline concepts to solve theoretical or applied problems, synthesizing research publications in a chosen area, and presenting research to peers and interdisciplinary colleagues. Coursework and research may draw on department and Marquette campus resources in the sciences and engineering.
Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree in a STEM-related field (for example mathematics, computer science, data science, statistics, engineering, or a natural science) from a regionally accredited institution or international equivalent, completed prior to starting graduate study. A minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale is required. Non-U.S. citizens must demonstrate English proficiency. Typical preparation includes at least a minor in mathematics (about three courses beyond a full calculus sequence) and proficiency in a high-level programming language (examples noted: C++, Fortran95, MATLAB, Java). The application requires transcripts, three academic letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose, a résumé/CV, and an application fee; GRE is optional. The department may recommend additional coursework if needed.
Graduates have moved into roles such as software developer and data scientist, with example position titles including Data Science Team Lead, Software Developer, and Data Science & Analytics Senior Analyst. The program is STEM-designated; international students are eligible to apply for up to 36 months of Optional Practical Training, extending potential employment authorization after graduation.
Applicants seeking merit-based aid should note the priority deadline of January 15 for MS admission and consideration for merit awards for the fall term. The program accepts applications on a rolling basis after the priority deadline as space permits. Prospective students can contact the graduate program recruiter for further information about funding and application guidance.
