What you'll study

The curriculum blends foundational theory, practical skills, assessment and leadership coursework. Required courses listed by the program are:

• Practicum in Student Affairs Leadership 1 (3 credits)
• Practicum in Student Affairs Leadership 2 (3 credits)
• Capstone in Educational Policy and Leadership (3 credits)

Entry requirements

To be eligible applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution (or international equivalent) and typically have at least a 3.00 GPA on a 4.00 scale. Some prior experience in a higher education setting is recommended. International applicants must demonstrate English proficiency.

• Transcripts from all prior institutions (U.S. coursework: copies for application; final official transcripts required upon admission)
• Three letters of recommendation
• A personal statement describing professional and academic goals, experiences in higher education, and how the applicant will support equity and social justice in the SAHE program
• Resume listing professional and educational experiences
• International applicants: TOEFL or other acceptable proof of English proficiency; transcript evaluation may be required
• Some applicants may be asked to complete an interview and/or writing test following initial screening

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for entry- to mid-level roles across student affairs functional areas. Typical employment settings cited by the program include academic advising, student success offices, career centers, diversity/equity/inclusion advocacy, orientation programs, residence life, and student activities. The curriculum emphasizes applying student development theory, research, leadership, assessment and professional standards to practical office work.

Scholarships & funding angle

Merit-based graduate assistantships and fellowships are available; SAHE applicants may apply for program-specific assistantships and should note priority application dates for assistantship consideration. Private scholarships may also be an option. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may be eligible for need-based federal student loans.
