A research-focused MS in Chemistry that prepares students to conduct independent laboratory research across analytical, biochemistry, inorganic, organic, polymer and physical chemistry (including chemical physics). Suited to applicants who want hands-on research training, close faculty mentoring and a flexible schedule for part- or full-time study.

What you'll study

The MSc requires 30 credit hours. Students complete formal coursework (selected with a faculty advisor), independent study and a research or literature-based project or essay. Research begins early in the program and students work within specializations including analytical chemistry, bioanalytical chemistry, biophysical chemistry, chemical physics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry and physical chemistry. Subspecialty research areas listed by the department include photochemistry; molecular spectroscopy; medicinal chemistry and drug discovery; materials chemistry and nanotechnology; organometallic, physical organic, bioorganic, polymer and theoretical chemistry; and chemical dynamics.

Entry requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or international equivalent completed before starting graduate study.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.00 on a 4.00 scale.
  • Demonstrated English proficiency for non-U.S. citizens.
  • Minimum undergraduate prerequisite: one year of physical chemistry plus an undergraduate course in the area relevant to the graduate course (e.g., analytical, inorganic, organic).
  • Application materials: online application and fee, CV, personal statement (recommend mentioning 2–3 faculty of interest), transcripts from all institutions (copies with official final transcripts after admission), three academic references. GRE is optional for the 2024–2025 year. International applicants must provide TOEFL or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.
  • Priority application deadline for admission and funding: December 15; thereafter reviewed on a rolling basis as space permits.

Career prospects

Graduates gain research skills, scientific writing and oral presentation experience intended to support careers in research, industry and further doctoral study. The department highlights broad employability across chemistry subfields; an American Chemical Society survey referenced by the program notes high engagement of PhD chemists in work they find challenging and aligned with their interests.

Scholarships & funding angle (general)

The department offers financial support annually through research assistantships and teaching assistantships that include tuition credits, a competitive stipend and subsidized health care benefits. Private scholarships may be available. U.S. citizens and permanent residents can also pursue need-based federal loans to help fund study.
