What you'll study

The programme balances advanced coursework with independent research. Core topics typically include graduate classical mechanics, electromagnetic theory, radiative processes, statistical and computational methods for astrophysics, and stellar and galactic astrophysics. Elective modules allow specialisation in areas such as cosmology, high‑energy astrophysics, exoplanets and planetary science, star formation, instrumentation and observational techniques.

Students normally complete a sequence of lectures and seminars, participate in group problem classes, and undertake a substantial research project or master's thesis under the supervision of a faculty member. Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a strong undergraduate degree in physics, astronomy, or a closely related quantitative subject. Typical preparation includes undergraduate coursework in calculus and differential equations, linear algebra, classical mechanics, electromagnetism, quantum mechanics and introductory astrophysics or physical cosmology.

Selection is based on academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose outlining research interests, and evidence of quantitative and computing skills. International applicants must demonstrate English language proficiency where required. Relevant research experience, computational projects or laboratory work strengthen an application.
