What you'll study

The programme balances one-to-one applied lessons and large-group instruction with classroom-based study. Core areas include applied performance (voice or instrument), music theory and ear training, music history and literature, and ensemble participation. Students take modules in topics such as counterpoint and harmony, orchestration, conducting, 20th/21st-century music, and methods of teaching music.

• Applied Lessons: Weekly private tuition with juried assessments and recital requirements.
• Ensembles & Performance: Orchestra, wind ensemble, choir, chamber groups, musical theatre productions and contemporary ensembles, with regular public concerts.
• Academic Study: Sequential theory and aural skills, music history surveys, analysis and research skills.
• Technology & Composition: Introductory and advanced courses in music technology, recording and production, composition workshops and MIDI sequencing.
• Pedagogy & Professional Skills: Courses in music education methods, rehearsal techniques, audition preparation and career development.
• Capstone Experience: Senior recital or portfolio project demonstrating performance or creative achievement.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to demonstrate academic readiness through completion of secondary education (high school diploma, A-levels or equivalent) and show musical preparation. Admission normally includes an audition or portfolio submission, and may include an interview and placement examinations in theory or aural skills.

• Successful audition or submitted recordings/portfolio in your principal area.
• Evidence of music training or experience; coursework in theory or instrumental/vocal study is advantageous.
• Standard university admission documentation from secondary schooling; international applicants will need to demonstrate English language proficiency.
• Letters of recommendation and a personal statement outlining musical goals are often required.

Career prospects

Graduates follow diverse career paths across performance, education and the broader creative industries. Common trajectories include orchestral or chamber musician, solo performer, choral director, classroom music teacher (additional certification may be required for K–12 teaching), musical director for theatre, composer/arranger, and roles in music production or arts administration.

Many alumni also pursue postgraduate study in performance, composition, conducting, musicology or music education, or build portfolios that lead to work in recording studios, theatre companies, festivals and community music organisations.
