What you'll study

This programme combines advanced clinical training, research methods and coursework in core biomedical and dental sciences. Typical modules cover advanced restorative and prosthetic dentistry, implantology, periodontics, endodontics, oral surgery principles, paediatric dentistry, orthodontic fundamentals, pain and pharmacology, and oral radiology. Students also take courses in research design, biostatistics, evidence-based dentistry and ethics.

A substantial component is supervised clinical practice in the University of Michigan School of Dentistry clinics, where students treat a broad case-mix under faculty mentorship. Most students complete an independent research project or thesis, working in laboratories or clinical research groups on topics such as biomaterials, tissue regeneration, dental public health or clinical outcomes.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally required to hold a primary dental qualification (DDS, DMD or equivalent) from a recognised institution. Typical supporting documents include a CV, academic transcripts, two or more professional or academic references, and a personal statement outlining clinical and research interests. Clinical experience in general dentistry is expected; some pathways may require evidence of postgraduate clinical practice.

Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proficiency in English through an approved test unless otherwise exempt. Shortlisted candidates are usually invited to an interview (in person or virtual) to discuss clinical experience, research goals and fit with available supervisory expertise.

Career prospects

Graduates move into a range of careers: continuing on to specialist residency programmes, taking advanced clinical roles in hospital or community settings, or entering academic posts in teaching and research. The degree also prepares dentists for leadership roles in clinical governance, public health dentistry, clinical trials and the dental industry (product development, clinical affairs). Those who complete a research thesis frequently continue to further postgraduate research or PhD study.
