What you'll study

The programme combines general liberal-arts coursework with professional studies in education and progressive, supervised clinical experiences in local schools. Core topics include the foundations of education, educational psychology, child and adolescent development, curriculum design, classroom management, assessment and data-informed instruction, and diversity and inclusion in classrooms.

• Foundations of Education – history and philosophy of schooling, legal and ethical responsibilities of teachers.

• Field Experiences and Student Teaching – progressively intensive placements in partner schools across the Finger Lakes region, culminating in a semester-long student teaching experience under mentor supervision.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have a high school diploma or equivalent and a record of academic achievement. Typical application materials include an official transcript, a personal statement explaining interest in teaching, and one or more academic or professional references. Candidates may be asked to attend an interview as part of the selection process.

Because the programme involves placements in K–12 schools, accepted students must complete background checks and health compliance requirements (for example, immunisation or TB screening) as required by placement partners and state regulations. Transfer applicants will be considered on the basis of prior college coursework and credits.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared to pursue initial teacher certification and begin careers as classroom teachers in elementary or secondary settings, depending on their chosen certification track and subject specialism. Alumni also move into roles such as special education teacher, literacy or curriculum specialist, instructional coach, school administrator (with further study), and education-related positions in non-profit organisations, museums, community education and youth services.

Many graduates continue to postgraduate study — for example, master's degrees in education, educational leadership, reading specialist programmes, or graduate certification for additional endorsements.
