What you'll study

The programme covers core concepts in contemporary medical education, combining theory with practical application. Typical topics include curriculum design and development, principles of teaching and learning in clinical and classroom settings, workplace-based assessment and feedback, educational research methods, and quality assurance and evaluation.

Learning is delivered through a mix of taught modules and applied assignments. Modules commonly focus on:

• Foundations of medical education: adult learning theory, professional identity formation and educational scholarship.
• Teaching and learning methods: small-group teaching, clinical supervision, simulation-based education and e-learning approaches.
• Assessment and feedback: design and implementation of formative and summative assessment, workplace-based assessment tools and constructive feedback techniques.

The PGCert comprises the initial taught modules intended to equip participants with practical teaching skills and an understanding of educational theory. The PGDip builds on this with further advanced modules, while the MMedEd requires completion of a substantial research or scholarship project demonstrating competence in educational enquiry and leadership.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally health professionals or educators working in clinical, allied health or academic settings. Typical entry requirements include a recognised undergraduate degree (or equivalent professional qualification) and relevant professional registration where applicable. Demonstrable experience in clinical practice or educational roles is expected, together with employer support for practice-based learning where required.

For progression from PGCert to PGDip and MMedEd, candidates will usually need to have completed the preceding award or provide evidence of equivalent prior learning. The programme is offered part-time and applicants should be able to commit time for taught sessions, workplace-based activities and independent study.

Graduates use the qualification to advance or formalise careers in medical and healthcare education.
