What you'll study

This three-year honours programme brings together central topics from sociology and psychology. In the first year you study foundational modules in both disciplines to build a broad base: introductory psychology (cognitive, developmental, biological and social approaches), basic research methods and statistics, alongside core sociological themes such as sociological theory, social institutions, and an introduction to qualitative and quantitative social research.

In the second year you deepen your understanding with intermediate modules. Psychology topics commonly include social psychology, developmental psychology, abnormal psychology, and experimental methods and data analysis. Sociology modules often include crime and deviance, family and life-course, work and organisations, social inequalities and contemporary social theory. You will gain practical research experience in both qualitative and quantitative methods.

In the final year you take advanced options and complete a substantive independent research project or dissertation drawing on methods from either or both disciplines. Final-year psychology content typically covers advanced topics such as cognitive neuroscience, health psychology, forensic psychology and advanced statistics, while sociology offers specialist options in areas such as media and culture, policy studies, globalisation, migration and social policy. Across all years, assessed work includes essays, lab reports, exams, presentations and research-based projects.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and welcomes applicants with a range of qualifications. You will normally need three A-levels (or equivalent qualifications such as BTEC, Irish Leaving Certificate, Scottish Highers, or international equivalents). Swansea University considers the full range of UK and international qualifications — applicants with Access to Higher Education diplomas, relevant work experience, or mature applicants are also encouraged to apply.
