What you'll study

The programme combines advanced clinical science, leadership and research methods to prepare registered nurses for senior practice roles. Core topics commonly include advanced pathophysiology, advanced pharmacology, leadership and management in healthcare, quality improvement and patient safety, health policy and systems, nursing informatics, and evidence-based practice.

Students follow one of three pathways:

• Nursing Administration: coursework emphasises organisational leadership, human resource management, finance and strategic planning for healthcare services, together with practicum experiences in management settings.
• Nursing Research: focus is on research design, biostatistics, qualitative and quantitative methods, grant writing and a thesis or capstone project that advances nursing knowledge or practice.
• Clinical Nursing: develops advanced clinical assessment, diagnostic reasoning and speciality practice through supervised clinical placements and simulation, preparing graduates for roles such as clinical nurse specialist or advanced practice within teams.

All pathways include a practicum or clinical residency component to apply learning in real-world settings. Electives and seminars often cover topics such as cultural competence, care of vulnerable populations, population health, and interprofessional collaboration.

Entry requirements

• Current, active registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the United States; international applicants must demonstrate comparable licensure or eligibility.
• A completed baccalaureate degree in nursing (BSN) or an approved equivalent from an accredited institution; some applicants with non-nursing degrees plus an RN qualification may be considered for bridge entry routes.
• Academic transcripts demonstrating satisfactory undergraduate performance; programmes typically expect evidence of preparation for graduate study.
• Relevant clinical experience in nursing; many applicants present one or more years of practice to support readiness for advanced study.
• A personal statement outlining professional goals and rationale for the chosen pathway, and professional references or letters of recommendation.
• Depending on the campus and pathway, additional requirements may include an interview, résumé/CV, evidence of immunisations and background checks for clinical placements. Standardised test requirements vary by campus and are often optional.

Graduates pursue a range of senior roles across acute care, community health, long-term care, public health and academic settings. Typical positions include nurse manager or director of nursing, clinical nurse specialist, nurse researcher, quality improvement coordinator, clinical educator, and policy or programme analyst in health systems.

The Nursing Research pathway particularly suits those aiming for research careers, doctoral study or roles in academic nursing and applied health research. The Administration pathway prepares nurses for executive and operational leadership, while the Clinical pathway supports advanced practice within speciality areas and interdisciplinary teams.

Across pathways, graduates are equipped to lead initiatives in patient safety, service redesign, workforce development and evidence-based care, and to work with diverse populations across the Californian health system and beyond.
