What you'll study

The programme develops subject knowledge and classroom practice for teaching chemistry across the secondary age range, with opportunities to teach related science topics where appropriate. Core study areas include chemistry pedagogy, curriculum design for the Broad General Education and senior phase, assessment for learning, inclusive practice, behaviour management and professional responsibilities.

• Subject Pedagogy: planning and delivering chemistry lessons, practical work and investigative approaches, linking theory to real-world applications.
• Curriculum and Assessment: approaches to the Curriculum for Excellence, designing SQA-quality assessments and preparing pupils for qualifications.
• Professional Studies: child development, safeguarding, equity and inclusion, professional ethics and legal responsibilities for teachers in Scotland.
• School-Based Experience: substantial supervised placements in partner secondary schools covering a range of stages and contexts, including experience of senior-phase courses.
• Reflective Practice and Research-informed Teaching: use of evidence and classroom enquiry to evaluate and enhance teaching; opportunities to engage with practitioner research.

Assessment combines coursework, reflective portfolios, observed teaching, and school placement evaluations. The balance of campus-based study and school placements prepares graduates for the transition into probationary teaching positions.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate honours degree with substantial chemistry content. Typical offers reflect a second-class honours degree or higher, or an equivalent qualification demonstrating subject knowledge in chemistry. Candidates whose first degree is in a related science may be considered if they can evidence sufficient chemistry content and competence.

• Demonstrable subject knowledge in chemistry is essential; transcripts and module descriptors may be requested.
• Some prior experience working with children or young people (paid, voluntary or placement) is normally required and should be evidenced in the application and references.
• Applicants must satisfy standard fitness to teach checks, including a satisfactory PVG/DBS disclosure and a health declaration; references are required.
• All applicants should be able to meet the language requirements for teaching in Scotland; proof of English language competence may be required for international applicants.

Career prospects

Graduates are prepared for employment as secondary school chemistry teachers and can progress into permanent teaching posts and induction/probationary year positions. Qualified teachers frequently move into roles such as faculty or department head, guidance or pastoral roles, and senior leadership within schools.

Outside the classroom, graduates may pursue careers in educational policy, curriculum development, laboratory-based outreach and public engagement, educational publishing, or further professional study (for example postgraduate research or leadership programmes). The combination of subject expertise and classroom experience is also valued by employers in science communication and industry liaison roles.
