What you'll study

This programme blends rigorous Mandarin language instruction with courses in Chinese linguistics, classical and modern Chinese literature, and cultural studies. Students develop spoken and written proficiency while exploring phonology, syntax and sociolinguistics of Chinese, literary forms from pre-modern poetry to contemporary fiction, and critical approaches including translation theory and comparative literature.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a recognised secondary-school qualification or equivalent. Typical requirements include academic transcripts showing strong performance, a personal statement outlining interest in Chinese language and literature, and one or more academic references. Applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate English proficiency through a recognised test score or approved alternative. Prior study of Mandarin is advantageous but not always required; placement testing will determine the appropriate language-level courses.
