The programme balances daily technique classes with coursework in choreography, dance history, theory and somatic approaches. Core studio work typically covers multiple genres including contemporary, ballet-based technique, jazz, improvisation and partner work, supported by repertory and ensemble rehearsal for public performances.

• Technique and Performance — progressive levels of contemporary and ballet-based technique, performance practicum, ensemble repertory classes and production participation.
• Choreography and Composition — composition labs, choreographic projects, creative research methods and collaborative making with composers, filmmakers or theatre artists.
• Dance Studies — history of dance, critical theory, cultural studies of movement and analysis of performance practices.
• Somatics and Movement Science — courses in anatomy for dancers, injury prevention, Pilates or yoga-based approaches and movement conditioning.
• Pedagogy and Community Practice — methods for teaching dance across age ranges, community engagement projects and studio management fundamentals.

The degree usually culminates in a senior capstone or choreography concert that synthesises practical, research and production skills. Students have access to on-campus studios, rehearsal spaces and department-produced performances that give practical experience in technical and production roles.

Entry requirements

Applicants need a high-school diploma or equivalent and should be prepared for a movement audition and/or submission of a performance portfolio. The audition typically assesses technical level, potential for growth, musicality and creative impulse; a short solo or prepared movement piece plus a short improvisation may be required.

• Competitive academic record in secondary school; departmental advisers review transcripts as part of the application.
• Successful completion of the department audition or submission of recorded materials if an in-person audition is not possible.
• Personal statement describing dance experience, goals and interest in choreography or teaching.
• Letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors who can speak to performance ability, work ethic and creative potential.
• International applicants must also meet the University’s English language proficiency requirements.
