What you'll study

The programme combines theoretical foundations, evidence-based practice and supervised field experience. Core topics typically include assessment and evaluation of learners with disabilities, instructional design and curriculum adaptations, behaviour analysis and classroom management, differentiation and inclusive practices, collaboration with families and multidisciplinary teams, assistive and instructional technology, and legal and ethical issues in special education.

Students engage in coursework on research methods and data-driven decision making to monitor student progress and to design Individualised Education Programmes (IEPs). A significant element of the programme is supervised practicum/student-teaching in local schools, where candidates apply strategies across grade levels and disability categories. Depending on the pathway chosen, the degree may culminate in a capstone project, portfolio or comprehensive assessment that documents professional competence.

Typical career destinations include special education teacher in inclusive or self-contained classrooms, resource or learning support teacher, behaviour intervention specialist, transition coordinator, and inclusion facilitator. Other pathways include roles in curriculum development, assessment and program coordination, early intervention services, and educational consultancy.

Many graduates use the master’s to obtain or upgrade state teaching certification in special education, to move into leadership positions within school districts, or to continue into doctoral study in special education, educational psychology or related areas.
