What you'll study

This programme balances language acquisition, literary and cultural study, and core linguistic theory. Core language work develops listening, speaking, reading and writing in German from introductory through advanced levels, with emphasis on authentic texts and communicative practice. Literature and culture modules explore German-language literatures, film, and historical contexts across periods from medieval to contemporary.

Complementing language and literature, the curriculum introduces fundamental areas of linguistics such as phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, as well as sociolinguistics and language acquisition. Students undertake close textual analysis, comparative studies of Germanic languages, and practical courses in translation and interpretation. The programme culminates in a senior capstone or honours project, which may be a research thesis, a translation portfolio or a practicum in community language work.

Entry requirements

Applicants should present a completed secondary school credential recognised by US higher education institutions. Typical admissions criteria include academic transcripts showing strong performance in humanities or language courses and a personal statement outlining interest in language study. Presbyterian College considers standardised test scores where submitted, but will evaluate applications holistically. International applicants must demonstrate English-language proficiency through recognised tests or prior study in English.

While prior study of German is beneficial, entry is usually possible with little or no previous German; placement testing on arrival determines the appropriate starting level. Transfer applicants are evaluated on collegiate transcripts and may receive credit for prior language coursework.
