What you'll study

This programme combines core study of development theory and evidence with methodological training and specialist optional modules. Core themes include theories of development and underdevelopment, political economy and governance, comparative public policy, and quantitative and qualitative research methods. The degree culminates in a substantial research dissertation allowing you to pursue an independent, original piece of work drawing on primary or secondary data.

• Core modules and skills: critical debates in development studies, research design and methods (qualitative and quantitative), policy analysis, and a supervised dissertation.
• Optional modules (examples): topics such as development and conflict, migration and transnationalism, gender and development, food security and rural change, urbanisation and housing, environment and climate adaptation, NGO practice and humanitarianism, and the political economy of aid.
• Methods and practice: training in data analysis, impact evaluation and fieldwork techniques is emphasised; many students use the dissertation to conduct country- or community-level empirical research.
• Teaching and assessment: seminars and lectures led by research-active staff, workshops on methodological skills, assessed by essays, policy briefs, presentations, quantitative and qualitative assignments and the dissertation.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in a relevant social science subject (for example politics, economics, development studies, sociology or anthropology) at a good honours level. Applicants with degrees in other subjects plus relevant professional experience in development or international organisations may also be considered. You must demonstrate the ability to undertake postgraduate study and to engage with both theoretical and empirical material.
