What you'll study

This Graduate Diploma combines subject-led pedagogy, professional studies and school‑based experience. You will study modules that cover the teaching of English literature, language and media, curriculum design, assessment for learning, behaviour management and inclusion. Sessions address planning lessons for Key Stages 3–5, classroom talk and writing development, using texts and multimodal resources, and approaches to exam preparation.

Coursework includes written assignments on pedagogy and curriculum, lesson planning and reflection, and a subject‑focused portfolio demonstrating developing expertise. Professional practice is assessed through sustained teaching placements in a range of partner secondary schools, where you will be observed and assessed against the Teachers’ Standards required for QTS. You will also engage in action research or an inquiry project that links classroom practice with current educational research.

Structure and placements

• Extended placements give experience of teaching mixed ability classes, GCSE and A‑level groups where available.

Entry requirements

• An undergraduate degree in English, English Literature, English Language, or a closely related subject. Applicants with other degrees may be considered if they can demonstrate adequate subject knowledge.
• A typical academic profile expected by providers is a good honours degree; check with the admissions team about specific expectations for borderline cases.
• Evidence of recent and relevant experience in secondary schools or with young people is normally required; this can include voluntary or employment placements that demonstrate classroom familiarity and commitment to teaching.
• GCSE (or recognised equivalent) grades in English and mathematics at the equivalent of grade C/grade 4 or above are usually required; for some applicants, evidence of suitable functional skills or qualifications may be considered.
• Satisfactory Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance, a health declaration, and fitness to teach checks are required before placements can commence.
• International applicants should meet the programme's English language requirements where applicable.

Career prospects

Graduates gain Qualified Teacher Status and typically take up roles as Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) in secondary schools teaching English. Many proceed into permanent teaching posts, while others move into specialised roles such as literacy coordinator, head of English, curriculum lead, or pastoral roles. Longer term routes include senior leadership, curriculum development, teacher education and mentoring, educational policy, exam boards, educational publishing, or further study such as Master's or doctoral research in education or English.
