What you'll study

This major combines core population science with migration theory and applied policy analysis. You will study the drivers and consequences of demographic change, the causes and impacts of internal and international migration, and methodological approaches for analysing population data.

• Core population modules: Demographic methods, population dynamics, fertility and mortality, ageing and life course perspectives.
• Migration-focused modules: Migration theory, migration and development, refugee and asylum studies, labour migration and settlement processes.
• Research methods: Quantitative techniques for population analysis (including basic statistics and use of population datasets), qualitative methods, and geographic approaches such as mapping and spatial analysis.
• Policy and practice: Migration policy and governance, population policy, health and social planning, and international human rights frameworks affecting migrants.
• Capstone or project work: A research project or practicum that applies methods to a real-world question in population or migration studies.

Entry requirements

Admission is through the University of Adelaide’s general Bachelor of Arts entry pathways. Typical entry expectations include completion of secondary qualifications equivalent to the Australian Year 12 or recognised tertiary entry, and satisfaction of the University’s English language requirements for international students.

• Academic background: No specific subject prerequisites are usually required, though studies in humanities, social sciences, mathematics/statistics or health studies are advantageous.
