What you'll study

The JD curriculum covers core legal doctrines, legal reasoning and professional skills needed for admission to practice. You will study foundational subjects such as Contracts, Torts, Criminal Law, Property, Constitutional and Administrative Law, Evidence and Civil Procedure, together with professional practice units that address ethics, legal research and advocacy.

Beyond core subjects, the programme typically offers advanced electives in areas such as Commercial and Corporate Law, Taxation, Intellectual Property, Family Law, Trusts and Estates, Employment Law, and Regulatory and Administrative Practice. A strong emphasis is placed on experiential learning through clinical legal education, simulated advocacy and moot courts, legal drafting, and supervised placements in community and industry settings.

The JD is usually delivered over a sustained period (full-time or part-time options), with a mix of lectures, seminars, small-group skills classes and workplace-based learning. Students undertake assessed legal research and writing tasks throughout the degree and may have opportunities to pursue a research project or capstone elective in specialised areas of law.

Entry requirements

Admission is for applicants who already hold a recognised bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in any discipline. Selection is based on academic achievement, the quality of prior studies, and other evidence of suitability for graduate legal study such as professional experience, personal statements or referees’ reports. Applicants with non-standard backgrounds may be considered if they can demonstrate relevant experience and academic potential.

International applicants must meet the University’s English language requirements. Applicants may also be required to satisfy additional enrolment or compliance checks for clinical placements. Specific grade thresholds, prerequisite rules and any accepted admission tests are set by the University and should be confirmed with UTS Admissions.
