What you'll study

This joint programme brings together modules from the Department of Education and York’s language provision in German. You will study core topics in education such as theories of learning and development, comparative and international education, curriculum studies, research methods and classroom practice. German modules cover language development and proficiency, German literature and film, contemporary culture, linguistics, and applied topics such as translation and language-teaching methodology.

The degree is structured as a four-year course with a Year Abroad, typically taken in the third year. During the year abroad you can study at a German-speaking university, undertake a language-centred placement, or gain teaching-related experience in a German-speaking school or institution. The year abroad is designed to consolidate language skills and cultural understanding and to provide real-world experience relevant to both education and languages.

Typical third- and fourth-year options allow you to pursue advanced topics in educational research, critical policy analysis, special educational needs and inclusion, assessment and evaluation, as well as specialist German modules such as contemporary German literature, film studies, sociolinguistics, and professional translation. Assessment methods include essays, language exams and portfolios, presentations, practical teaching tasks, and an independent research project or dissertation.

Entry requirements

The programme welcomes applicants with a strong academic profile and demonstrable ability in German. Applicants will normally be expected to have qualifications equivalent to completed secondary education with good grades and competent prior study of German (for example GCSE or equivalent, or evidence of language learning since school). Applicants without recent formal qualifications in German may be asked to take a language assessment to demonstrate ability or to follow a preparatory programme before entry.

York considers a wide range of UK and international qualifications; applicants holding international baccalaureate diplomas, Scottish Highers, BTECs, or other recognised qualifications should consult the university’s admissions guidance for equivalence and specific requirements. Mature applicants and those with relevant work or voluntary experience in education or language teaching are encouraged to apply; selection may take into account personal statements, references and interviews.

Graduates leave with a blend of subject-specific language skills and knowledge of educational theory and practice, opening routes to a range of careers. Common pathways include:
