What you'll study

This interdisciplinary degree brings together modules from the School of Business and the Law School. In the early years you will build core knowledge in business functions—accounting and finance, marketing, organisational behaviour and economics—alongside introductory legal subjects such as the English legal system, contract and tort.

Typical module themes across the programme include:

• Foundations of Business: principles of management, introduction to marketing, financial accounting and quantitative methods for business.
• Foundations of Law: legal methods and reasoning, contract law, tort, public law and criminal law.
• Intermediate and applied topics: corporate and commercial law topics, company law, employment law, business finance, strategy and business ethics.
• Research and project work: business research methods, applied projects, and a final-year dissertation or major project that allows you to investigate a business-law issue in depth.
• Optional modules and skills development: negotiation and dispute resolution, international business law, entrepreneurship, business analytics and professional skills such as legal drafting or management communication.

The programme is typically structured over three years, with an option in many cases to take a sandwich year in industry or a year abroad to gain practical experience and broaden your international perspective. Teaching combines lectures, seminars, case studies, group work and assessed coursework, with opportunities for mooting-style exercises and employer-led projects where available.

Entry requirements

Entry is competitive and usually based on a combination of qualifications. Typical offers ask for good A-levels (for example, a standard offer is often in the range of mid-B grades), or the equivalent in another recognised qualification such as BTEC, Scottish Highers/Advanced Highers, Irish Leaving Certificate, or international school-leaving qualifications.

Applicants with Access to HE diplomas, relevant work experience or mature applicants will be considered on an individual basis. English language proficiency is required for applicants whose first language is not English; recognised tests such as IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent qualifications are accepted at the School’s published levels.

All applicants are assessed holistically. Typical application materials include academic transcripts, a personal statement explaining your interest in both business and law, and references. Admissions may also consider evidence of extra-curricular activities, work experience or demonstrated interest in commercial and legal topics.
