What you'll study

The programme covers the core foundations required for a qualifying law degree alongside a wide range of optional subjects and practical skills training. In early years you study compulsory modules such as Public/Constitutional Law, Contract Law, Tort, Criminal Law, Property Law (Land Law), Equity & Trusts and Legal Research & Skills. Teaching combines lectures, seminars and small-group tuition.

In later years you choose from options that typically include Commercial Law, Company Law, EU/European and International Law, Human Rights, Family Law, Employment Law, Intellectual Property, Evidence, Clinical Legal Education and courses on international criminal justice. Assessment is by a mix of written examinations, coursework essays, case commentaries, oral presentations and assessed moots. Many students also undertake a substantial independent project or dissertation in their final year.

The School emphasises practical skills such as advocacy, negotiation, drafting, client interviewing and ethical awareness. Opportunities for experiential learning often include mooting competitions, pro bono clinics, simulated client work, and optional placement or year‑in‑industry routes where available.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a recognised secondary qualification such as A‑levels, BTEC, or an international equivalent. Typical offers for A‑level applicants fall within a competitive range; international applicants will be considered with equivalent qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate. Applicants from non‑standard backgrounds are welcome and are assessed on academic potential and motivation.

Other standard entry expectations include competence in written and spoken English; international students will usually need to meet an English language requirement. Mature applicants and those with prior higher education or professional experience should submit transcripts and a personal statement outlining reasons for studying law. Admissions may also take account of contextual information and references.

Career prospects

Graduates from the LLB progress to a wide range of careers. Many move into legal vocational training to become solicitors or barristers (by taking the necessary professional training courses and vocational stages). Others work as paralegals, legal assistants, in‑house compliance or contracts roles, or in related occupations such as policy analysis, civil service, mediation, and roles with NGOs and international organisations.

The degree also provides a strong foundation for careers in business, finance, human resources, and management, and is commonly used as preparation for postgraduate study in law (LLM), criminology, or other interdisciplinary masters programmes.
