What you'll study

The programme combines core theoretical frameworks with applied study of global institutions, security, foreign policy and contemporary international challenges. Teaching typically includes a mix of lectures, seminars, case studies and a substantial independent dissertation or research project.

• Core themes: international relations theory, global governance, security studies, and research methods (qualitative and quantitative).

• Research project / dissertation: a supervised, in-depth piece of independent research on a topic negotiated with academic staff, demonstrating methodological competence and original analysis.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have a good undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline such as Politics, International Relations, Economics, Law, History or a related social science. Candidates with significant professional experience in international or policy-facing roles may also be considered.

• Academic: an upper second-class honours degree (2:1) or an equivalent international qualification is typically required.
• English language: applicants whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency; a commonly accepted standard is a high-intermediate to advanced English test score (for example, an overall IELTS equivalent commonly asked by UK universities).
• Additional materials: a personal statement outlining your motivation and interests, academic transcripts, and references. Some applicants may be invited to interview.
