What you'll study

This MA combines core theory with applied study, enabling you to understand and evaluate contemporary international problems. Teaching typically covers classical and contemporary international relations theory, global governance, security studies, international political economy, and the politics of conflict and peacebuilding. You will take a research methods module that introduces qualitative and quantitative techniques, critical approaches to evidence, and ethics for postgraduate research. The programme usually culminates in a supervised dissertation or extended research project which allows you to pursue an independent topic in depth.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold an undergraduate degree in politics, international relations, international history, economics, law or a related social science with a strong academic record. The department will also consider applicants with significant relevant professional experience in international organisations, government, NGOs or journalism, particularly where prior study is in a different discipline.

All applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate proficiency in academic English through an appropriate qualification. Additional requirements such as references, a personal statement outlining your interests and research aims, and a CV are typically part of the application.
