What you'll study

This Master's combines core construction project management subjects with modules that focus on sustainable practice, digital tools and research. Teaching balances theory, case studies and applied practice so you learn how to deliver projects that meet time, cost and quality targets while reducing environmental impacts.

• Project Management and Control – techniques for programme planning, scheduling, resource allocation and performance measurement.
• Sustainable Construction and Circular Economy – principles of low-carbon design, materials selection, waste minimisation and lifecycle thinking.
• Procurement, Contracts and Commercial Management – procurement routes, standard forms of contract, contract administration and commercial risk allocation.
• Building Information Modelling and Digital Construction – BIM processes, collaborative working, digital delivery and information management across the project lifecycle.
• Risk, Health & Safety and Quality Management – systematic approaches to risk appraisal, H&S regulation and maintaining quality on site and in supply chains.
• Construction Economics and Cost Management – estimating, cost planning and financial control for sustainable decision-making.
• Research Methods and Dissertation/Project – methods for applied research and a substantial independent project on a sustainability-related topic chosen by the student.

Modes of study typically include a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, group design and procurement exercises, site visits and guest lectures from industry. Assessment is by coursework, unseen exams, group work and the dissertation/project.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a good honours degree (commonly a 2:1) in a relevant subject such as civil engineering, construction management, architecture, surveying or a closely related discipline. Applicants with a lower second-class degree and substantial relevant professional experience in construction or the built environment are also considered.

International applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate competence in English. Typical requirements are an academic English qualification at a level appropriate for postgraduate study; examples commonly recognised include IELTS, PTE Academic or equivalent qualifications. Candidates may be asked for a CV, references and, for some applicants, an interview or portfolio.

Typical roles include construction project manager, sustainability or environmental manager, site manager, programme or client-side project manager, sustainability/ESG consultant, BIM manager and cost/contract manager.
