What you'll study

This programme combines core biomedical science with clinical investigation and practical skills. Across the course you will study human anatomy and physiology, cellular and molecular bases of disease, pathology, pharmacology and immunology, together with modules on clinical laboratory techniques and clinical diagnostics.

• Foundations: modules introducing normal structure and function, cell biology and homeostasis to establish a clinical context.
• Disease and investigation: pathology, microbiology, clinical biochemistry, haematology and immunology that focus on mechanisms of disease and diagnostic approaches.
• Practical and clinical skills: supervised laboratory training in assay techniques, microscopy, sample handling, quality control, and experience of clinical sampling and basic patient-facing skills through simulation sessions.
• Research and data analysis: statistics, research methods, critical appraisal of clinical literature and an independent research project or dissertation to develop investigative and report-writing skills.
• Optional topics: students can often choose modules in areas such as genetics and genomics, medical imaging basics, infection control, or advanced laboratory technologies depending on staff availability and timetable.

The programme is typically delivered through lectures, small-group tutorials, practical laboratory classes and clinical simulation. Assessment methods include written exams, practical assessments, laboratory reports and a final-year research project.

Entry requirements

Entry is aimed at applicants with a strong scientific background. Typical applicants will have completed secondary-level qualifications with substantial coverage of biological science; chemistry is often highly recommended. The University accepts a range of UK and international qualifications and will consider relevant vocational qualifications and experience.

Successful applicants are normally expected to demonstrate strong practical aptitude, effective communication skills and the ability to work in teams. International applicants may be required to meet English language requirements.
