What you'll study

The programme builds advanced knowledge of political theory, comparative politics, international relations and public policy, combining substantive courses with methodological training. Core topics typically include contemporary political theory, comparative party systems and elections, European politics and law, international security and diplomacy, governance and public administration, and policy analysis.

Methodology training is a significant component: students study qualitative methods (case study design, interviews, discourse analysis), quantitative methods (statistics for social sciences, survey analysis, regression) and research design. You will also take seminar courses that support development of an independent research project and complete a supervised master’s thesis. Electives and specialised seminars allow deeper focus on areas such as EU studies, human rights, political economy, migration, environmental politics or media and political communication. Opportunities for internships, language courses and participating in research centres supplement taught modules.

Entry requirements

Applicants are expected to hold a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in political science, international relations, sociology, law, economics or another relevant social-science discipline. Typical application materials include certified transcripts, a CV, a personal statement or motivation letter outlining academic and career objectives, and one or two academic or professional references.

Because instruction is in English, evidence of English-language proficiency is required from applicants whose prior degree was not taught in English; acceptable evidence includes recognised test scores or a certificate from a previous programme taught in English. Some applicants may be invited for an interview or asked to submit a brief research proposal, especially if applying to research-intensive tracks.
