What you'll study

The programme is a structured advanced course of study bringing together political science, law, economics and area studies to examine contemporary international relations. Students follow core modules in IR theory, comparative foreign policy, international organisations and global governance, while also studying methods of political and social research (qualitative and quantitative).

• Core topics: theories of international relations, diplomacy and consular practice, international law and human rights, security studies (traditional and non-traditional), European integration and EU foreign policy.
• Research and methods: research design, statistics for social sciences, policy analysis, practical workshops in drafting policy briefs and conducting interviews.
• Regional specialisms: Central and Eastern Europe, the Balkans, Eastern Partnership states, transatlantic relations and Eurasian geopolitics.
• Applied modules: conflict resolution and mediation, negotiation techniques, international political economy, development policy and global environmental governance.
• Skills and capstone: language options, internship placements or applied projects with public institutions or NGOs, and an independently researched master’s thesis supervised by academic staff.

The programme normally runs across consecutive semesters with a combination of lectures, seminars, simulation exercises, guest lectures from practitioners, and opportunities for internships and study mobility through international exchange agreements.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent in international relations, political science, law, economics, history or a related social science. Selection emphasises academic performance, motivation and preparation for graduate-level study.

• Academic transcript and degree certificate from a recognised institution.
• Personal statement or motivation letter outlining study objectives and professional goals.
• Curriculum vitae demonstrating relevant academic, language and/or professional experience.
• One or more academic references or letters of recommendation.
• Proof of English language proficiency if the applicant’s prior education was not in English; recognised certificates or documented prior instruction in English are accepted.
• Some specialisations or research tracks may request a short research proposal or attend an interview with programme staff.
