What you'll study

This MA combines advanced study of leadership theory with applied modules that address policy, organisational change and research methods. Teaching draws on interdisciplinary research from the Department of Education and includes seminar discussion, casework, project-based learning and an independent dissertation or practice-based project.

• Core themes: contemporary leadership theory; strategic and distributed leadership; ethics, equity and inclusion in leadership; educational policy and governance.
• Research training: qualitative and quantitative research methods; designing and conducting evaluative studies in educational contexts; critical appraisal of evidence to inform leadership practice.
• Applied modules: change management and school improvement; leading professional learning; data use for improvement and accountability; stakeholder engagement and community partnerships.
• Independent project or dissertation: a substantial research or practice-based project that allows you to investigate a leadership question from your workplace or a relevant context, supervised by academic staff.
• Flexible delivery: the programme typically offers options for full-time and part-time study and uses a mix of workshops, lectures and online learning to accommodate employed professionals.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to have an undergraduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university. A relevant honours degree (or equivalent) is typical, and applicants with substantial professional experience in education or related sectors will also be considered.

• Professional experience in a school, college, local authority or education organisation is strongly recommended and often expected for applicants to leadership-focused pathways.
• Two references (academic and/or professional) that speak to your suitability for postgraduate study and leadership potential.
• A concise personal statement describing your professional background, reasons for applying, and proposed area of study for the dissertation or project.
• Applicants whose first language is not English will need to meet the University’s English language requirements.
• Shortlisted applicants may be invited to an interview or provide further evidence of professional practice, particularly for competitive places.
