What you'll study

The programme covers the core legal subjects required of an academic qualifying law degree alongside a range of optional modules so you can tailor study to your interests. In the early stages you will study foundational subjects such as Contract Law, Tort Law, Criminal Law, Public/Constitutional Law, Property Law and European and Comparative Law, together with Legal Research and Legal Methods. These modules develop your understanding of substantive law and your ability to read and analyse statute and case law.

As you progress you will be able to choose from optional topics that typically include Company and Commercial Law, Employment Law, Family Law, Human Rights Law, Intellectual Property, Administrative Law, Environmental Law and Alternative Dispute Resolution. The course emphasises practical skills: legal drafting, advocacy and negotiation, client interviewing, and problem-solving exercises. Many cohorts also have access to mooting, pro bono clinics or a legal advice clinic where you can practise interviewing clients and apply legal knowledge to real-world scenarios.

Assessment is usually a mix of unseen exams, coursework essays, problem-based assessments, oral presentations and skills-based tasks. There are opportunities for independent research projects or a dissertation in the final year and some students take placement or study-abroad options where available to broaden their experience.

Entry requirements

Successful applicants usually have strong secondary qualifications appropriate to university entry in their country (for example A-levels, BTECs, or equivalent). Oxford Brookes also welcomes students with Access to Higher Education qualifications, international qualifications and mature applicants with relevant experience. Admissions consider the overall academic profile, personal statement and, where required, references.
