What you'll study

This programme builds a foundation in finance theory and quantitative techniques before allowing you to specialise in applied areas. In early years you study modules in financial accounting, principles of finance, micro- and macroeconomics, business mathematics and statistics. Core second‑year topics commonly include corporate finance, investments and portfolio management, financial institutions and markets, and research methods for finance.

In the final year you choose from options that may cover topics such as advanced corporate finance, derivatives and risk management, behavioural finance, fixed income and credit analysis, financial econometrics and contemporary issues in international finance. Practical elements include case studies, financial modelling using spreadsheets, analysis of real financial data and group projects. Many students can also take an optional placement year in industry or a study-abroad year to gain international experience.

Entry requirements

Typical entry is based on completion of secondary qualifications with a good level in quantitative subjects. For UK applicants universities generally expect A-levels (or equivalent) with acceptable grades and prefer a quantitative subject such as Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Economics or Statistics. GCSE Mathematics (or equivalent) is normally required at grade C/4 or above.

International qualifications such as the International Baccalaureate, BTEC or other national school-leaving credentials are accepted when they meet the required academic standard. Mature applicants and those with relevant work experience are also considered; evidence of numeracy and proficiency in English will be required for non-native speakers.

Career prospects

Graduates from BSc Finance programmes commonly move into roles across the financial sector and corporate world. Typical entry roles include financial analyst, investment analyst, treasury or corporate finance analyst, credit analyst, risk analyst, and roles in wealth management or financial planning.

Other pathways include graduate schemes with banks, accountancy and audit firms (often after completing professional qualifications), roles in insurance, regulatory or compliance functions, and positions in financial technology firms. Graduates also go on to take postgraduate study or professional qualifications such as CFA, ACCA or CIMA to specialise further.
