This master's programme develops advanced Russian language skills alongside in-depth study of Russian literature, history, politics and culture. Study combines compulsory core modules with options that allow specialisation in areas such as translation and interpreting, contemporary Russian media, literature and cultural theory, or historical and political studies.

• Advanced Russian language and stylistics – intensive practice in spoken and written Russian, registers and academic/professional styles.
• Literary and cultural studies – close reading of major periods of Russian literature, theory of literature, and cultural history.
• Society and politics – modern and contemporary Russian society, political institutions, and foreign policy perspectives.
• Translation and interpreting – practical and theoretical modules on translation techniques, specialised texts and consecutive/liaison interpreting (where offered).
• Research methods – training in research design, archival work, corpus methods, and academic writing in English and Russian.
• Optional modules – may include media studies, folklore and ethnography, comparative Slavic studies, or language teaching methodology.
• Master’s thesis – an independent research project supervised by a member of staff, demonstrating subject expertise and research competence.

Teaching methods include seminars, language workshops, research seminars and individual supervision. Assessment typically involves essays, oral examinations, translation projects and a final thesis. Students are encouraged to make use of language labs, university libraries and extracurricular conversation groups to boost communicative competence.

Entry requirements

Applicants are normally expected to hold a relevant bachelor’s degree (for example in Russian studies, Slavic studies, linguistics, philology, history or international relations) or an equivalent qualification. Demonstrable competence in Russian is required; most successful applicants have reached at least B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, with C1 preferred for language-intensive options.

• University degree in a relevant subject or equivalent qualification.
• Proof of Russian language proficiency (CEFR B2–C1 level or institutional assessment).
• Evidence of academic readiness, such as a transcript and a short statement of purpose describing research interests and motivation.
• References from academic or professional referees; an interview or entrance examination may be required in some cases.

Applicants whose first degree is in a different subject but who can demonstrate prior Russian study or relevant professional experience may be considered, sometimes with conditionally required bridging work or language preparatory study.
