What you'll study

This honours bachelor programme combines core theoretical subjects, applied clinical skill development and an independent research project. Study areas include anatomy and physiology of speech and swallowing, phonetics and phonology, typical and atypical language development, literacy and learning, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), adult neurogenic communication disorders (including aphasia and dysarthria), paediatric speech sound disorders, dysphagia assessment and management, and evidence-based intervention approaches.

The degree places strong emphasis on clinical practice: students undertake progressive supervised placements in a range of settings such as hospitals, community health, schools and private practice, including opportunities in regional, rural and remote locations. Research and inquiry skills are developed through coursework in research methods, statistics and an honours thesis or major research project that prepares graduates for evidence-based practice and further study.

Entry requirements

• Successful completion of secondary education equivalent to Australian Year 12 with required university admission scores or completion of an approved tertiary pathway such as a recognised diploma. Specific selection thresholds vary by applicant type and campus.
• Evidence of satisfactory English language proficiency for international students (for example, an accepted IELTS, TOEFL or equivalent). Domestic applicants whose secondary schooling was in English will normally meet the language requirement.
• Some campuses may require additional selection processes such as written statements, interviews or ranking based on academic attainment and other selection criteria.
• To participate in clinical placements, all students must meet professional and statutory requirements, which commonly include a criminal history check, working with children clearance, up-to-date immunisations and any other clearances or health requirements mandated by placement providers.
• Applicants with prior tertiary study in related health or communication fields may be eligible for credit or advanced standing subject to university assessment.

• Graduates are eligible to apply for membership with the national speech pathology professional body and to pursue clinical registration pathways required to work as speech pathologists.
• Typical employment settings include public and private hospitals, community health services, early childhood centres, primary and secondary schools, disability services, rehabilitation centres, aged care facilities and private practice.
• Other career directions include working in telepractice, multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams, research and academic roles (especially following honours and further postgraduate study), health policy and program coordination, and roles within non-government organisations focused on communication disability and inclusion.
