What you'll study

This programme combines foundational science and linguistics with applied clinical practice. Early coursework covers anatomy and physiology of speech and swallowing, phonetics, typical language and literacy development, and introduction to clinical reasoning. Core subjects progress to include assessment and intervention for paediatric and adult communication disorders, dysphagia (swallowing difficulties), augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), voice disorders, and cognitive-communication impairments.

Research methods, evidence-based practice and professional ethics form an ongoing thread through the degree. Students also study topics in multicultural communication, Indigenous health perspectives, telepractice, and working with families and allied health teams. Throughout the programme there is a substantial clinical education component delivered through supervised placements in a range of settings — for example hospitals, community health services, schools, early intervention programs, aged care and private clinics — supported by on-campus clinical laboratories and simulated practice.

Entry requirements

Applicants are typically expected to have completed senior secondary education or an approved equivalent. Admission is competitive and selection is based on academic achievement and, where required, supplementary information such as personal statements or interview. Prior study in English is essential; background in biology or human sciences is advantageous but not always mandatory.

Domestic applicants with alternative qualifications such as diplomas, or applicants seeking entry via recognised pathways, should consult the university for assessment of prior learning.
